The ivy over the wall in this photo has recently been cut back. On either side of the arched entrance in the brick wall on the left you can now see two enormous old painted advertisements. The one on the north side is easier to see than the one on the left (south side). I have found no photos of this wall that clearly shows what these advertisements were for. At the top of the northern one, you can just about make out some lettering. I can possibly make out FARR.... and wonder if it might be for FARRINGTONS, once the lime and coal merchants of Reigate. Is it possible that anybody has a photo that shows these advertisements? The photos of the tunnel are usually too oblique an angle to make anything out.

Note that in all these old photos of the tunnel that the pavement, such as it was, used to run on the west side of the tunnel. It was later moved to the east side.

A closer look at the above picture, showing a van in Tunnel Road, and Adams's Stores.

Paul Gale from Clevedon posted this comment on Friday 15 June 2012 13:09:00.

I remember the shop that is shown here as Adams's Stores became Reigate's first supermarket, sometime in the 1960s. We were all amazed at the concept of getting a wire basket and filling it yourself off the shelves!

Comment 2

Peter Burgess from Crawley posted this comment on Tuesday 29 December 2015 09:44:00.

The door of the shop that you can see here still exists, and is in remarkably good condition, when you consider its age. It is now in the caves behind, open to the public several times a year.
